Sodexho Fined for Asbestos Crimes

Sodexho Inc. will be fined $81,000 for violating asbestos laws and potentially putting workers and students at the risk of developing mesothelioma following shoddy asbestos abatement work in the spring.

CBS News reports that inspections at Alderson-Broaddus College in March by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found 12 “serious” health violations during asbestos removal operations that were being managed by Sodexho and it is employees.

OSHA qualifies a violation as “serious” when it determines that an employer was aware, or should have been aware, that certain health violations create the “substantial probability” of death or harm.

"Asbestos work poses serious safety and health risks to workers, including lung disease and other disorders," said Prentice Cline, director of OSHA's Charleston Area Office. "Sodexho must immediately correct these violations to ensure that its employees have a safe and healthful work environment."

Sodexho was also cited for other violations, including failure to have a proper supervisor monitoring the work, failure to monitor the daily asbestos exposure of employees, failure to properly dispose of asbestos ceiling tiles; and failure to properly equip vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters.
