Spirit Airlines Sued in Consumer Fraud Lawsuit Over Fees

A federal class action consumer fraud lawsuit was filed against Spirit Airlines claiming it deceived passengers by implying that a usage fee it charged was required by the government.

The complaint alleges that Spirit actively misrepresented the cost of airfare by making the usage fee appear to be a government-required tax or charge, “when, in reality, the fee is nothing more than additional airfare because Spirit does not provide any bona fide service in exchange for the fee,” according to the Miami Herald.

“Spirit believes the claims are without merit and intends to defend the case,” said Spirit spokeswoman Misty Pinson.

The lawyer representing the plaintiffs estimate that as many as 20 million passengers may have been affected by the fees over the past four to six years, according to the Miami Herald.
