Study: Statins Increase Risk of Diabetes

A new study suggests that people with a high risk of developing diabetes can find themselves with an even higher risk level if they are taking certain widely-prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs called “statins.”

Researchers examined information from a 17,000-patient trial known as Jupiter and found that those with diabetes risk factors, such as higher blood-sugar levels while fasting and obesity, have an increased chance of developing the disease while taking a statin, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The study, published in the medical journal Lancet, found that the benefits of statins in preventing heart disease still outweigh the risks, according to the Wall Street Journal.

On the other hand, a recent U.K. study suggests that statins may not be the most effective way to stop heart disease. Researchers there said that although the drugs may be effective for treating many people with heart problems, this accounts for only a small amount of patients who are actually prescribed statin drugs, according to the Daily Mail.
