Study Finds MRI Scanners May Impact Memory

A recently released study has revealed that frequent exposure to MRI scanners and their magnetic fields may have adverse effects on mental abilities.

HealthDay reports that the study found exposure to the static magnetic field generated by MRI machines may result in reduced memory power and adversely affect basic functions such as concentration, attention, spatial and visual awareness.

MRI scanners operate by using radio waves and a magnetic field to create detailed images from inside the body.

The study involved 30 volunteers, who received high or medium exposure to an MRI’s static magnetic fields at a week’s interval. The study revealed that after medium and high exposures, the volunteers took 5 to 21 percent more time to complete complex mental tasks, according to HealthDay.

The researchers said that the result has highlighted the need to study the effects of MRI scanners on professionals such as doctors, engineers, and cleaners who are exposed to the magnetic field on a daily basis.

The study, which has not established a cause and effect relationship, was published in the journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
