The C8 Science Panel announced that it found a probable link to C8 exposure and ulcerative colitis - a rare inflammatory bowel disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract.

The panel also found a probable link between C8 and thyroid disease, according to The Athens Messenger. In its study of Mid-Ohio Valley residents, there were more than 2,000 validated cases of thyroid disease and there were six times as many women than men that reported the disease.

The two most common forms of thyroid disease include hyperthyroidism (when the body produces too much thyroid hormone) and hypothyroidism (when the body doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone), according to The Athens Messenger.

The C8 Science Panel consists of three independent epidemiologists and it was created after a class-action settlement was approved in February 2005 in a lawsuit against DuPont’s Washington Works. The complaint was filed against DuPont for releasing C8, or PFOA, into the Ohio River, according to the Athens Messenger. PFOA, also known as ammonium perfluorooctanate, is a Teflon byproduct,

The panel is working to find out if there is a probable link between C8 exposure and human disease and will report its findings in October.
