Sunoco Inc. was hit with a chemical exposure lawsuit by the widow of a print shop employee who developed leukemia and died after long-term exposure to benzene-containing solvents made by the company and others.

Sanford Duttera was a pressman for 30 years at the Standard Register in York, Pennsylvania, and was exposed to solvents containing benzene, manufactured by Sunoco, on a daily basis, according to Law360 (subscription required). Other defendants in the suit include Exxon Mobil Corp., U.S. Steel Corp., and E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co.

The complaint states that the defendants knew that “their benzene-containing products placed the decedent, and other end users similarly situated, at significantly increased risk for contracting cancer, leukemia, and other blood and bone marrow disorders.” Duttera’s widow filed the complaint and claims that the defendants were aware of the many health risks linked to benzene but did not take steps to minimize the content of the products or inform her late husband and his employer of the risks, according to Law360.
