Supermax Accused of Mistreating Mentally Ill Inmates

The infamous Supermax Prison in Colorado is being accused of abusing inmates who were transferred to the establishment.

The Supermax prison is known for self-mutilating inmates who spent up to 23 hours a day in solitude, some of whom even committed suicide, according to the Denver Post.

The complaint claims that the Bureau of Prisons is violating its own policy by transferring inmates to Supermax, where the prison stops treating prisoners for their illness, according the Denver Post. The suit also states that the prison sometimes takes prisoners off of their medications, making it difficult to prove whether they can be transferred out of the prison.

Several Supermax prisoners claim that the strict security and inhuman conditions of Supermax causes the mental health problems of inmates to worsen. They seek an order from a judge to stop the transfer of mentally ill prisoners to Supermax and properly house and treat those who are currently at the prison.
