Sutter Memorial Sued After Baby Gets MRSA

Sutter Memorial Hospital is facing medical malpractice litigation by a family whose baby allegedly caught methicillin-resistant staph aureus (MRSA) while at the California hospital – and then spread it to other relatives.

CBS 13 Sacramento reports that the family claims the baby contracted the skin-borne bacteria when he had surgery at the hospital as an infant and subsequently infected his parents, sister, and grandmother.

The disease has recurred for seven months now among the family, who may have to deal with it all their lives.

CBS 13 also reports that 23 newborns tested positive for MRSA in the neonatal ICU at Sutter in the months following the baby’s infection.

Meanwhile, Sutter Memorial Hospital responded by saying that the hospital follows stringent precautions to ensure the safety of patients. But a lawyer for the family has a video showing a doctor of the hospital touching a door knob and handling a newborn without sanitizing hands, according to CBS 13.
