The Impact of Cerebral Palsy

Report this content

Cerebral palsy greatly affects the quality of a person’s life by limiting their ability to do simply everyday tasks.

About 41 percent of children with cerebral palsy are limited in their ability to crawl, walk, run or play and nearly 31 percent need to use special equipment such as wheelchairs or walkers.

There are also major economic costs associated with having cerebral palsy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that the lifetime cost to care for an individual with cerebral palsy is nearly $1 million. It also estimates that the lifetime costs for all people born in 2000 with cerebral palsy will total $11.5 billion in direct and indirect costs.
