Tips to Prevent Elderly Abuse in 'Boomers & Beyond'
“Boomers & Beyond,” a catalog that was released as an independent supplement in the August 31 edition of USA Today, features a number of interviews, advice, and helpful tips from experts relating to the prevention of elderly abuse. Among the contributors is Gabriel Miller, who serves as general counsel and as the managing attorney for Sokolove Law.
In addition to an interview with Miller about general questions surrounding nursing home abuse, he also wrote an article for the catalog that details the surprising prevalence of nursing home abuse, as well as the best ways to prevent it from happening.
“With the country facing considerable fiscal issues, it’s quite unnerving to read about public services in healthcare and eldercare that are being cut. And despite efforts to develop and utilize home healthcare, adult day care centers, assisted living facilities and residential care homes, nursing homes still house many aging adults,” he writes. “Unfortunately, government reports continue to paint an alarming picture of abuse, poor care and staffing issues.”
In order to decrease the risk of a nursing home patient suffering some form of elder abuse, Miller points out that families must demand respect and ensure that the employees at a nursing home facility are committed to providing the best care possible to their patients. He also suggests that families should make sure nursing homes do not value profits over providing adequate care to patients, and take appropriate action to raise awareness regarding elderly abuse by commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day every year.
“Boomers & Beyond” also includes an interview with TV personality and “Boomerologist” Alan Thicke, workout advice from health and wellness expert Jillian Michaels, as well as tips from other experts on elder health and living.
