What topped the list of consumer complaints in 2011?

The Consumer Federation of America released its annual list of the top 10 consumer complaints, which was compiled from a survey of 38 consumer agencies about the types of complaints they received in 2011, according to CNN.

Auto sales and repair complaints topped the list, driven by false advertising, disputes and fraudulent purchases. Credit cards and mortgage-related fraud appeared next on the list, highlighted by predatory lending and abusive debt collection tactics.

Other consumer complaints stemmed from problems related to home improvement/construction, retail sales, utilities, provided services, and various types of fraud. Of note, the top five fastest-growing complaints were about fraud, debt collection abuses, “Do Not Call” violations, mortgage-related problems, and home improvement.

Over the year, the consumer groups received nearly 290,000 complaints, and they recovered or saved consumers almost $147 million.
