Toyota Issues Recall for 681,000 Vehicles

According to Consumer Reports, the recall was prompted because of defects that occurred during the installation contact-type stop lamp switch on a North American assembly line that led to “silicon grease [that] may have reached the inside of the switch and caused an increase in electrical resistance.”

If this happens, warning lamps on the instrument panel might improperly light up, the shift lever might not properly move from park, or the car may not start. In some instances, the stop lamps in the vehicle may also stop operating.

Most of the vehicles in the recall are Tacoma trucks from model years 2005 to 2009, accounting for 495,000 automobiles in total. These vehicles also have airbag connectivity issues where the air bag warning light will remain illuminated after starting the truck, even if the air bag is not actually deactivated. This would stop the airbag from deployment in the event of a car accident, possibly leading to serious injuries.
