Travel Websites Sued in Consumer Fraud Lawsuit Over Price Fixing

Report this content

A class-action lawsuit was filed that claims some major online travel bookers and hotel companies conspired to engage in price fixing.

The complaint alleges that Hilton Hotels, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, and others conspired with travel sites including Expedia, Travelocity, and Priceline’s Booking.com to fix hotel prices across the country, according to the Los Angeles Times. The complaint was filed on behalf of hotel-room purchasers nationally.

The consumer fraud lawsuit alleges that as part of an agreement to work together, the online hotel retailers conspired with the major hotel operators to secretly create and enforce Resale Price Maintenance (RPM) agreements to thwart competition on hotel room prices. Hotels agreed to the fixed prices because they fear losing business brought in by online travel websites, according the Los Angeles Times.

The complaint asks the court to order the hotels and travel sites to pay an unspecified amount of damages and to halt the practice of fixing prices.
