U.S. Sets Rule for Rearview Car Cameras

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that it will require automakers to installrearview cameras into all passenger vehicles.

According to The New York Times, the NHTSA originally proposed the rule in 2010. Their final version of the rule, which was sent to Congress this week, will require the all new vehicles to have rearview cameras installed by 2014.

The NHTSA rule stems from a 2008 law - the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act - which was named after a toddler who was killed when his father was backing an SUV into a driveway.

“Video camera-based systems are by far the most comprehensive and cost-effective currently available solution for reducing backover crashes, fatalities and injuries,” said the NHTSA.
