VA Opposes Creation of Burn Pit Registry

Officials at the Veterans Affairs Department are against a pending bill that would create a registry of soldiers who served in Iraq or Afghanistan and who may have been exposed to the toxic chemicals from open burn pits.

The VA says there is no value in such a registry and instead believes it is more effective to identify medical problems related to burn-pit exposure by conducting a “comprehensive, prospective study of long-term adverse health effects” among the entire population of war Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, according to The Army Times.

“Burn pits, large and small, were used throughout Iraq and Afghanistan to destroy waste, with little known about what materials might have been burned and the potential ill effects,” Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM), the chief sponsor of Senate bill, told the Army Times.

If you or a loved one was harmed by exposure to chemicals in burn pits in the military, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact Sokolove Law for a free legal consultation and to learn about your options.
