Wage & Hour Suit Leads to $90M Award

A California court awarded 15,000 former and present security guards who worked for ABM Security Services nearly $90 million in a wage-and-hour lawsuit that claimed the company withheld pay from them.

The former employees alleged that they were denied off-duty rest breaks in violation of California law, according to the Central Valley Business Times.

The company, a unit of AMB Industries Inc., admitted that all of its security guards are told to remain on call during their breaks, which the court found to be illegal. Previously, ABM had an exemption from the state that allowed the practice but the company failed to renew the exemption.

ABM says it plans to appeal the court’s decision.
