Warning for Pradaxa Patients

Philly.com is reporting that a drug commonly used to thin blood and prevent blood clots and strokes in patients with irregular heartbeats may have dangerous and even fatal side effects.

Pradaxa, also known as dabigatran etexilate, is most often prescribed to patients with irregular heartbeats as a blood thinner to prevent strokes. The FDA is now reporting that Pradaxa has caused numerous cases of serious and fatal uncontrollable internal bleeding in patients, and that they have received nearly 4,000 reports of adverse drug reactions from healthcare practitioners and patients. Nearly 550 of these reports were of patient deaths, while 2,367 reports concerned hemorrhaging. In the reports, nearly 300 patients experienced acute renal failure, and 644 patients suffered a stroke. Fifteen cases of liver failure were also reported.

It is estimated by some that only one percent of serious adverse reactions to drugs are actually reported to the drug companies and the FDA, which indicates that hundreds of thousands of people may have been affected by Pradaxa’s dangerous and deadly side effects. In 2011, Pradaxa received the highest number of serious or fatal adverse drug reaction reports to the FDA.
