Water Tainted With Prozac Linked to Autism

A new study suggests that water contaminated with psychiatric drugs may be a contributing factor to autism in children.

Researchers tainted water tanks of minnows with the antidepressants Effexor and Prozac as well as the antiseizure drug Tegretol, according to Bloomberg. The minnows showed gene patterns similar to those found in people with autism.

The study, published in PLos ONE, suggests that small amounts of psychiatric medications in the drinking water supply may cause autism. The study also notes that symptoms of autism were linked to rats exposed to psychiatric drugs.
