Wet Seal Chain Sued for Race Bias

Former managers of Wet Seal filed a race discrimination lawsuit against the retail chain claiming it had a policy of firing African-American employees and also denying them raises and promotions.

The discrimination lawsuit says that the company tried to reduce the number of African-American employees because they did not fit its “brand image,” according to The New York Times. The complaint includes a copy of a 2009 email from the company’s senior vice president for store operations to lower-level managers written after she visited several stores that said, “African Americans dominate--huge issue.”

The former managers seek class action status on behalf of more than 550 Wet Seal and Arden B stores across the U.S., according to the Times. They also want punitive and general damages and back pay.
