What Asbestos Products May be in Your Building?

A recent report on the removal of asbestos products that must occur before an old Sparta, TN jail included an interesting look into just how much asbestos there can be in older buildings that you or a loved one may be using on a regular basis.

According to My Sparta News, the town recently purchased land that currently holds a jail that is more than 40-years-old and plans to eventually demolish the structure so it can make way for the new White County Justice Center. However, before such a demolition can take place, the city must first make sure that any asbestos in the jail has been safely removed by licensed experts.

In light of this, the article also references an asbestos abatement estimate that the city received from a local environmental service company. In it, estimates regarding the amounts of products in the building are listed alongside the price it is estimated an asbestos abatement project would cost. Among the asbestos products mentioned in the estimate are:

  • 500 square feet of spray applied fireproofing (500 square feet): $20,000-$25,000
  • 2,400 square feet of multi-layer floor tile
  • 50 square feet of 12 x 12 floor tiles
  • 170 square feet of mastic under non-ACM tile and carpeting
  • 1,000 square feet of exterior transite panels

The estimate also included daily charges for air monitoring and clearances during the 10-15 days that the asbestos abatement procedure would take place.

These numbers are very interesting in that they show just how many products that were used to build older buildings may contain dangerous asbestos products that, if damaged, could lead to the development of mesothelioma in those who inhale the dangerous fibers.
