A federal judge awarded about $6 million to the family of a Veterans Affairs Medical Center patient who died of a brain aneurysm.

Most of the award will go to help care for Mary Ann Smith’s disabled son whom she tended while she was alive, according to The Legal Intelligencer.

Seventy percent of the damages were assessed against her doctor, a radiologist at the VA center who was responsible for the reading of Smith’s CT scan, which set the course of her treatment over the two weeks prior to her death. The remaining 30 percent of damages was split between two other doctors who provided care to Smith.

This is the latest incident in which the government has faced a large verdict related to Veterans Affairs, according to The Legal Intelligencer.
