Wrongful Death Lawsuits Filed in FL

The untimely deaths of two high school football players after strenuous summer workouts last year have led their families to file wrongful death lawsuits to hold responsible parties accountable.

The parents of Isaiah Laurencin and Don’terio J. Searcy say the pressures to perform, even during hazardous heat conditions, directly led to their deaths. The students collapsed last year, succumbing to heat strokes during team workouts, according to The New York Times.

Their parents blame school leaders and coaches for not recognizing the dangers. Precautions were not taken to prevent injury, they added.

According to the Times, the Broward school board and the Ben Hill County Board of Supervisors declined to comment on the pending lawsuits.

In less than 20 years, 40 high school football players have died from heat stroke, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research at the University of North Carolina. Those numbers have increased in the last decade.
