Yasmin Lawsuit Settlements Reach $142M

In a matter of one month, the settlement amount surrounding Yasmin lawsuits has soared from $110 million to $142 million, according to Business Week.

So far, Bayer AG has settled 651 Yasmin lawsuits alleging its Yaz and Yasmin birth controls caused fatal blood clots that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. The company said that it faced 11,900 lawsuits over Yaz and Yasmin in the U.S. involving about 14,000 plaintiffs, according to Bloomberg.

“Bayer is only settling claims in the U.S. for venous clot injuries (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) after a case specific analysis of medical records,” said the company in a recent stockholders’ report.

On April 10, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered Bayer and other contraceptive makers to strengthen blood-clot warnings on their birth control pills.

The drugmaker is rejecting claims that their birth control pills caused women to suffer from gallstones or damaged their gallbladders, according to a lawyer representing plaintiffs in consolidated Yasmin lawsuits.
