The new testing laboratory utilises artificial intelligence and numerical simulation to support product development. The investment also underpins Zenner’s ambitions for international growth.

The new laboratory in Helsinki is unique in scale in Finland and rare by international standards.

Insinööritoimisto W. Zenner Oy, an engineering consultancy and subsidiary of Solwers Plc, has invested in a new 320-square-metre testing laboratory in Helsinki. The company’s total laboratory space now amounts to nearly 700 square metres. The facilities provide a comprehensive environment for testing acoustics, HVAC engineering, flow, thermal and building physics phenomena.

Founded in 1972, the engineering consultancy specialises in HVAC and acoustic design as well as the design of specialised piping systems. Zenner provides a wide range of technical design, measurement and consulting services for machinery and equipment manufacturers as well as construction companies.

According to Managing Director Johannes Usano, the total value of the investment is approximately EUR 300,000.

Advanced testing and artificial intelligence to support product development

The laboratory’s environmental chambers enable a broad range of test and experimental set-ups, including full-scale testing of environments such as hospital or hotel rooms prior to construction. The new services allow for efficient assessment of technical performance, including acoustics, ventilation, heating and cooling.

Zenner applies numerical simulation and artificial intelligence within its laboratory operations to support both product development and testing. Advanced simulation techniques and machine learning enable the performance of equipment and structures to be assessed prior to costly physical testing, improving cost efficiency and overall competitiveness.

“Customers benefit from faster and more cost-efficient product development when numerical simulation and artificial intelligence are used alongside physical testing,” says Usano.

Focus on growth and international markets

In terms of scale, the laboratory is unique in Finland and rare internationally. Through the introduction of new measurement methods and enhanced product development capabilities, Zenner aims to increase its market share and improve operational efficiency. According to Usano, the development of the laboratory is also intended to support international market expansion.

“In particular, European markets where the regulatory framework is familiar and the operating environment is stable.”

The company may also consider new recruitments over the longer term.

“The outlook is encouraging, and this project represents an important step in strengthening our growth and competitiveness,” Usano concludes.
