The college winners of a design hack competition run by Southampton Solent University and Ikea have been presented with their awards after their work was displayed in-store.

Designed and built by A-level product design students at Barton Peverill College in Eastleigh, the furniture was made with support from the University’s Product Design 3D workshop and technical instruction.

The brief was to create sustainable products by combining existing Ikea products - a process known as upcycling.

The four winning designs will also be featured on IkeaHackers.net, - a site about modifications on and repurposing of Ikea products.

18 year old, A-level product design student Hazel Crosland who won first and third place said: “The bedside table lamp is made from an old laundry basket and the free-standing table lamp was originally a glass vase, which I filled with fairy lights.

“I am hoping to go into architecture and these skills are bound to be relevant to my studies in the future.”

Second prize went to Emily Braybrook for her children’s table and fourth place was awarded to Emma Chiddle for her dining table.

All the winners were given Ikea vouchers and are invited to the BA (Hons) Product Design exhibition at Southampton Solent University in a few weeks’ time.

Alex Soggins, Acting Local Marketing Manager at Ikea, Southampton, who is also a former Solent University advertising graduate said: “Our customers have been really taken with these products, so much so that we had to make it clear that they were not for sale!”

Southampton Solent University’s partnership with Ikea is part of a Partner Affiliation Network (PAN) which encourages professional input and work placement opportunities for students.

Mark Jones, Programme and Group Leader for Animation Arts and Product Design at Southampton Solent University said: “This competition demonstrates how we can link both further and higher education with industry and provides an opportunity for students to see the progression opportunities.”
