BBC showcases student's interior designs
A talented student from Southampton Solent University shared his flair for interior design with millions of television viewers, when he appeared in the first episode of BBC1’s new home makeover programme, Your Home in their Hands.
BA (Hons) Interior Design (decoration) student, Nick Snow, was selected from thousands of would-be designers to take part in the new BBC series in which homeowners hand over their keys to two up-and-coming designers, in a bid to inject some much-needed style into their homes.
Nick was given the bathroom - one of the trickier rooms to design - but he rose to the challenge and created a bright, sophisticated and chic room that was loved by both the owners and show presenter Celia Sawyer.
“You’re not really given much information about your clients but I like to create calming, uncluttered and welcoming spaces that make people feel good about themselves,” said Nick. “I was thrilled with the positive reactions from the owners and Celia Sawyer, one of my favourite designers.
It didn’t go quite so well when Nick had to work with the other designer on a joint room. “Kirsty had a very different style to me and it was difficult to find a balance, but I was determined to keep it professional and do my best for the clients.”
Nick, who is just starting his final-year at Solent, has had a passion for design for as long as he can remember. “When my sister was outside playing football, I would be indoors watching 60 minute makeover, it’s something I have always loved,” he says.
After his A levels Nick got a good job in a bank but it was making him miserable and he decided to give it all up to go to University and do what he loved.
“I had a good salary at the bank but I wasn’t happy. I love what I do now and I can’t wait to carve out a successful career for myself in the world of commercial interior design”, says Nick.
“I love the idea of creating hotel, restaurant and office spaces that allow people to relax, enjoy and be productive,” he adds.
Nick’s had lots of positive feedback from the show and is hoping it will lead to some exciting career opportunities in the future.
