Bournemouth & Poole music students awarded stadium gig
Eleven college bands from across Hampshire competed for the chance to play at a major sporting event this summer, courtesy of Southampton Solent University’s annual ‘Solent Sound’ music competition.
Bournemouth & Poole College band ‘Up In Smoke’ have been awarded the top prize of a stadium support slot during a T20 cricket match at the Ageas Bowl at a presentation ceremony at Southampton Solent University on Friday 23 May 2014. The band is made up of Nick Cowan (18), Lennon Yates (20), Auburn Lewis (24), Jack Wellman (19) and Guy Keep (20).
‘Up In Smoke’ and other A level and BTEC music students from across the region performed in Southampton Solent University’s state-of-the-art television studio in front of a live audience and judged by a panel of industry experts including: A&R manager Giles Stanley; writer & music producer Paul Statham; and Professor Paul Rutter, Programme Group Leader for Popular Music at the University.
Throughout the year the college bands taking part in ‘Solent Sound’ have had mentoring and guidance from students on the BA (Hons) Popular Music Performance and BA (Hons) Popular Music production degree courses, to prepare them for the two-day competition.
The eleven colleges taking part were Andover College, Basingstoke College of Technology, Bournemouth & Poole College, City College Brighton & Hove, Fareham College, Itchen Sixth Form College, Portsmouth College, Queen Mary’s College, Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, St Vincent College and Wiltshire College.
Lennon Yates, ‘Up In Smoke’ guitarist from Bournemouth & Poole College says, “Solent University have given us such a great opportunity, we are really excited about our upcoming stadium gig and to play to such a large responsive audience. We’d like to say a massive thank you, for all the support from our lecturers and the Solent University staff and students.”
Chris Jackson, organiser of ‘Solent Sound’ says, “We’re passionate about nurturing talent at Solent University. This is just one example of the innovative partnership projects we run with local schools and colleges. The calibre of bands was so high, it was almost impossible to choose an outright winner; but we look forward to seeing ‘Up In Smoke’ take to the stage at the Ageas Bowl this summer.”
