A musical collision of old and new, Shanty Clash, brings together high-energy contemporary urban performance and folk heritage.
Southampton Solent University welcomes an innovative community event from renowned artist, Annika Ström, which will merge maritime heritage and modern music in the heart of the city.
Shanty Clash takes place in Southampton’s Guildhall Square on Monday 18 November from 7pm. The free event will acknowledge the 175th Anniversary of Southampton’s Port through an experimental sparring of ancient choral sea shanties and beat boxing DJ performances calling on a number of renowned professional artists.
Thought up by Annika Ström, an internationally renowned Swedish artist, Shanty Clash is part of the artSOUTH programme of events across the South Coast supported by Hampshire County Council, Sculpture Trust and Artswork.
Live performances will feature Still Moving DJs, a Southampton-based electro swing-vintage duo and Treva Who, a local urban musician. The Shanty Clash choir has brought volunteer singers from Southampton together to perform a unique song especially for the event. The choristers have Fiona Funnell at the helm as Choir Coordinator, who produced the original score.
Kate Maple, Showcase Gallery Curator said: “This exciting event by Solent University and Annika Ström will see a visual clash of cultures merging contemporary beat boxing DJs with traditional sea shanty choral singing.
“The community are welcome to join us for what promises to be an event like Southampton has never seen before!”
Refreshments will be available from the Artisan Café in the Guildhall Square throughout the evening. The event can be followed online via the hashtag #shantyclash.
