Coaching innovation at Southampton Solent University

Tackling childhood obesity, building confidence and increasing sports participation of 13-14 year old girls, are just some of the student projects that will be showcased at Southampton Solent University’s Coaching Innovation Symposium on Thursday 1 May.

Now in its third year, this annual event celebrates the achievements of University’s Coaching Innovation Programme (CIP), which encourages sports students to develop their own coaching projects to improve lives and address social issues within the wider community.

"Over the last three years, more than 70 CIP projects have benefitted local schools, hard-to-reach groups and the elderly population,” says Kevin Harris, Senior Lecturer in Sport Development Policy and CIP Director.

"The symposium gives students, academics and employers the opportunity to view the latest student-led coaching innovations that will be delivered into schools and the wider community next year”, he continues.

For their project, sports coaching and development students Daniel Stott, Ben Baczala, Callan Bryan and Charles Bodunrin, will be going into a school over a ten-week period and producing a Key Stage 2 curriculum based on the understanding of science through enjoyable movement, games and physical activities.

“We wanted to come up with something that would take the lesson off the page and breathe life into it”, says final-year student Daniel Stott. We want ‘Science through Movement’ to show how interactive, physical and fun the subject can be.”

Visitors to the symposium will have the opportunity to meet the students, and to discuss their projects and network with like-minded professionals and community representatives.

“This project highlights the important role that the University and its students are playing in the provision of sport and physical activity in the city”, says Kevin Harris.

The symposium will take place at the University’s city centre campus at East Park Terrace on Thursday 1 May from 5-8pm. If you would like to attend the informal event or find out more about CIP, email kevin.harris@solent.ac.uk
