David Jamilly awarded honorary degree

David Jamilly received an honorary degree of Doctor of Business from Southampton Solent University today (Friday 22 November), in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry and his extensive philanthropic work.

Co-founder and Director of one of Europe’s most renowned events companies, David started his career in events in 1987. His London-based events empire Theme Traders has staged some of the capitals most lavish bashes and his clients range from A-list celebrities to leading global corporations. David is a seasoned veteran at bringing the ‘wow factor’ to events of every scale.

David has published two books on events, Party People and Enjoy: The Creative Approach to Events, and lectures on events all over the world including at the Special Event (Chicago, 2013), and AIME (Melbourne, 2013).

Outside his professional life, David is known for his charitable, humanitarian and philanthropic work. He founded Kindness UK in 2011 and has recently headed the design and distribution of free ‘kindness packs’ to all primary schools across the UK. These aim to promote kindness in our youth and make the future a kinder, brighter place.

David also founded The Good Deeds Organisation in 2007 which promotes everyday heroes and is also a patron of several other charities.

In 1977 David founded a charity to bring fun and laughter to children in hospitals and hospices all over the UK. Over the last 25 years, Pod Children’s Charity has entertained over 1,000,000 hospitalised children and holds monthly shows in over 150 hospitals.

On receiving his honorary degree, David Jamilly comments, "I have great admiration for the excellence, values and ethics of Southampton Solent University. What particularly strikes me is the genuine sense of empowerment and engagement from students and tutors alike and a 'head on shoulders' practical approach to academic endeavour'

David added, "I believe that in today's world academic knowledge combined with practical application is the winning formula and that your time at Southampton Solent University has put you in very good stead in this respect."

The university will be awarding honorary degrees to academics and professionals who have made an outstanding contribution in their field of expertise during its annual graduation ceremonies which will take place at Southampton Guildhall from 18-22 November 2013.

More than 2500 students will be graduating with degrees and professional qualifications in subject areas ranging from journalism to sport science, fashion to yacht-design, and business management to TV and film production.
