Keen to sharpen business as well as ball skills, Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) is going into partnership with Southampton Solent University to provide professional training for its club administrators.

As part of the collaboration, the first of its kind in the country, Solent University is developing an online learning course for Sydenham League club administrators.

The course, funded by a development grant from the Football Association, will be adapted from the hugely successful distance learning course created and run by the university for the League Managers Association.

Members of the League will work with experts from the university’s football studies and learning technologies departments to adapt, design and develop the new online course.

“The university’s academic provision, facilities and research and consultancy work is having a recognised impact in the football industry. This coupled with our expert knowledge of learning technologies makes us the perfect partner,” said Phil Green, Director of Sport Solent.”

“We are looking forward to working with members of the board to provide an online learning resource that benefits the individual, the club and the League.” He added.

The course will also be available to people who are interested in getting involved with their local club.

Bob Purkiss, Development Officer for the League says: “This course will enable more people to get involved with the game and gain a qualification that is transferable. We hope that it will encourage people of all ages to get involved and enjoy being a part of a football club.”

Ian Hoare, the Chairman of the Sydenhams League, and Phil Green, Director of Sport Solent, sealed the collaboration by signing a partnership agreement on at 6.30pm on Monday 13 January at Totton and Ealing Sports Club.
