Alternative processes, procedures, techniques and tools for creating learning environments appropriate for the twenty-first century were explored at an international research conference organised by Southampton Solent University over the summer.

Over 80 delegates from 21 countries presented research, discussed developments and debated the effects of cutting-edge technologies and innovations in the classroom at the International Conference on Information Communication Technologies in Education (ICICTE).

Now in its 15th year, the conference attracts high quality submissions and leads to a large number of international collaborative projects.   Representatives from all sectors of education attended the conference, which was held on the Greek Island of Kos.

As well as presentations and workshops on school, higher, adult/continuing education and professional training , delegates heard from Professor Michael Moore from Pennsylvania State University; considered one of the 'fathers of distance education'.

Conference Chair, Dr Chris Barlow, Associate Professor at Solent University said, “The conference was a huge success. Once again, it attracted a fantastic range of topics relating to technology in education.”

Dr Barlow – who leads the Southampton Solent research cluster on Innovation in Applied Technology and Engineering (INNATE) - has been involved with the conference for over 10 years.

“Recognising the importance of leading research in innovation and educational practice, the University has managed this conference since 2011,” he added.

As well organising the event, a number of Solent staff presented results from their research at the conference. These included Polly Long (Senior Lecturer, Media Technology), Lee Davison (Researcher, Acoustics) and Dr Paul Wright (Academic Leader, Geography and Environment) presenting, and Mark Udall (Head of School, Technology) and Professor Margaret Ross (Computing) co-authors on a paper by Dr Sofia Meacham from the University of Bournemouth.

The conference was co-organised by the Justice Institute of British Columbia (Canada), and sponsored by Turning Technologies, Oracle Systems and Quality Matters.

Next year's conference will be returning to Kos from 9-11 July 2015.
