Southampton Solent University welcomes two thought-provoking events to campus to celebrate the positive changes individuals and businesses are making to shape a more sustainable and positive future.

Embrace the Change: Local stories

A family-friendly event, ‘Embrace the Change: Local stories’, celebrates Southampton and Hampshire organisations already working towards sustainable, positive change. This interactive event offers the opportunity to meet like-minded people involved in addressing the issue of sustainability.

The first of two events welcomes an audience on campus to celebrate local achievements of the community and to share stories of change in the area. There will also be six inspirational speakers discussing how and why they made changes in their own lives to focus on what matters most to them.

Speakers include Christine Seaward, Chief Executive of Hampshire’s The Sustainability Centre, an award-winning social enterprise charity; Jani Franck, founder of The Art House and a dedicated social entrepreneur from Southampton; William Bloom, co-director of the Foundation for Holistic Spirituality and Richard Barnett of Transition Towns and a senior lecturer in Social Science.

Maddy Harland co-founder of Permaculture Magazine will be focussing on sustainable living and Cara Sandys a self employed artist and environmentalist will recount how she is off-setting her massive carbon footprint between living in Australia and the UK.

There will also be a children’s workshop and vegan lunch included for ticket holders.

An innovative global webcast will bring together some of the most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenging the status quo with tangible solutions for a better future on 27 March.

Key speakers will be presenting short talks in Solent University’s Studio Solent on topics such as the economy, media, environment and personal change with experts tuning in via Skype from around the globe. An open discussion and debate will follow after each topic with an interactive panel of experts.

Kate Raworth, a researcher, lecturer and public speaker on creating economic toolkits fit for 21st century challenges, will be discussing how we can create an economy that is fair and sustainable.

Alice Hooker-Stroud Communications Officer for Zero Carbon Britain will be investigating how to create a viable environment for future generations.

Seán Dagan Wood is the editor of Positive News, the world’s first newspaper dedicated to reporting positive developments and solutions to social issues. He will assess how the media can be instrumental in creating a better world.

Looking at personal change, Tim Macartney, a leadership development consultant, will lead the debate on how can we encourage meaningful change within ourselves and our society.

The event is supported by a number of staff and academics from Southampton Solent University who will assist with the facilitation of the discussions.
