Final-year students from the Technology School at Southampton Solent University will have the chance to impress potential employers at the WRTI Technology Innovation Awards this summer.

The awards, sponsored by the Wessex Round Table of Inventors, are open to Solent University students on engineering and computer networking courses.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony, attended by industry representatives. This year’s event will take place in the Southampton Solent University Conference Centre on 11 June from 5.30-7.30pm. There are cash prizes for the most innovative and commercial projects, in two categories.

This year’s entries include a web-based driving school system, a prototype of a portable refrigeration system and methods of reducing energy consumption for households using electronic equipment.

Last year’s Geoff Thomson Memorial Award for engineering was presented to Martin Middleton for his coolant recovery and reuse system. The BEng (Hons) Engineering with Business student’s practical engineering solution is successfully being used by his employer, DP World Southampton.

“Exhibiting at the event or winning one of the awards helps to raise the students’ profile, boost their CVs and gain future employment,” says Nick Woodfine, Academic Leader for Engineering.

“The awards are a great opportunity for the students to meet potential employers and for businesses to identify graduate talent.”
