Staff, students and Tudor history buffs are set to benefit from an exciting new partnership between Southampton Solent University (SSU) and the stunning, new £27million world class Mary Rose Museum, based at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Van Gore CBE and the museum’s Chief Executive, Rear Admiral John Lippiett CB CBE DL, will mark the historic new partnership at an official signing on Friday 4 July in the presence of His Royal Highness King Henry VIII!

Through the partnership, both SSU and the museum will benefit from professional development opportunities, collaborative projects, joint events and the use of each other’s facilities.
Rear Admiral John Lippiett, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University in 2011, says:

“We are delighted to cement our relationship with Southampton Solent University through this partnership and to be able to continue to offer internships to their students.  The experience and knowledge they gain from the Mary Rose team and through working in the museum provides a great springboard for their future careers ”

This is the latest in a series of partnership accords that the University has signed with regional education and business organisations including: Business South, B&Q, The Ageas Bowl and the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce.

“Two of our graduates have already enjoyed successful paid internships with this exciting museum and we are thrilled to enter into a partnership that will offer a wide range of opportunities to students and staff from both organisations”, says Professor Gore.

The Mary Rose captured the world's imagination when she was raised from the seabed in 1982. She is the only sixteenth century warship on display anywhere in the world and the brand new Museum built around her reunites her with many of her 19,000 artefacts.

“The museum is an incredibly exciting project and we look forward to working on a range of dynamic initiatives, events and joint projects that will provide invaluable study and work opportunities for students, staff and the wider community,” continued Professor Gore.
