EYES & EARS – live concert photography exhibition
Final-year Southampton Solent University student, Coralie Pilte, is showcasing her love of live music in a stunning new photographic exhibition, EYES & EARS, at The Art House, Southampton, from 25 February until 30 March 2014.
The photographic exhibition is part of Coralie’s final-year project for her BA (Hons) Popular Music Journalism degree. It aims to illustrate three genres of live music photography: the fan shot; journalism images; and a crossover of both, when the fan feeds the music journalist.
“I want to take the audience on photographic journey, from phone snapshots to press images, showing the two perspectives: photography that illustrates a music review and amateur pictures that feed the fan inside,” says Coralie.
The exhibition is Coralie’s first, and features pictures taken during her years as a fan and then a journalist, starting with a 2009 Oasis gig. She hopes that the exhibition will prompt people to share gig memories and take a fresh look at their own photographs.
Bring Me The Horizon, King Charles, and international artists Lou Doillon and GROUPLOVE, are just some of the bands and artists featured in the Eyes & Ears exhibition.
“You may not know all of the bands featured, but how often do you get to see an exhibition of live music images. If you look back on your old gig photos with nostalgia, this exhibition is for you”, she says.
Originally from France, Coralie’s desire to carve out a career in the music industry began at gigs in Paris, where she would take snaps and share them with friends. “Wanting to share my love for music and the artists I was seeing pushed me to go to Solent and study music journalism.”
“During my time at university my phone snaps have developed into professional pictures. My eye has become more aware of what is happening on stage and capturing an emotion or a movement has become my main focus when shooting at a gig,” she says.
The exhibition will be held at The Art House in Southampton from February 25 until March 30, 2014. There will be an official opening of the exhibition on 26 February at 7.30pm with local band, The Kaleurs - the first band Pilte photographed as a music journalist – playing an acoustic set.

About the artist
Coralie Pilte is a young music journalist and photographer currently based in Southampton, UK. Originally from a small town near Lyon, France, she moved to England to pursue a career in the music industry and chose Southampton Solent University where she has been studying BA (Hons) Popular Music Journalism for the past three years. Throughout this time she has developed a special love for music photography with a focus on live music.
