Lights! Camera! Action! Solent TV, Southampton Solent University’s student-run channel, will be hosting its first 48 Hour Film Challenge for budding filmmakers at the University this weekend.

The one-off competition starts on Friday 27 February when students from all areas of the University will be given a series of ‘obstructions’ that they will need to include in their short film.

The Solent TV team will also give them a title, props, and specific genre, such as comedy or drama. They will then have 48 hours to create a three-minute short film to be aired on the Sunday (1 March) at a special awards ceremony.

The guest judges, who are yet to be announced, will watch all the competitors’ videos before announcing the winners and handing out prizes, which range from cinema tickets to an amazing training course at Raindance Film Festival.

Heading up the competition is Solent TV’s production manager, Georgia Constantinou, who said: “It’s very exciting to be hosting this competition for the students at Solent.

“We had the idea to do a large-scale competition that could include anyone and everyone from around the University after we, Solent TV, competed in a separate 48 hour film challenge in Portsmouth.

“We had so much fun making this and thought it would be something worthwhile for students to do as there is not a lot like this available in Southampton.”

Solent TV’s own short film, created for Portsmouth’s notorious DV Mission 48 Hour Film Challenge, won a trophy for best cinematography and was nominated for two others including Best Story and Best Film.

The prizes for Solent TV’s 48 Hour Film Challenge promise to be even bigger and better, with sponsorship and prizes from The Harbour Lights Picture House, Sony and Raindance Film Festival.

Tickets for the awards ceremony taking place from 7pm at The 1865, Brunswick Square, Southampton cost £3 and must be bought either before the award night by contacting Georgia Constantinou or on the door.

All the videos will be released on Solent TV’s webpage and social media channels after the award ceremony.
