BA (Hons) Interior Design student Craig Beardall has been named the winner of the Best Retail Design 2014 by the Society of British and International Design (SBID).

The competition was judged by leading industry professionals and announced at this year’s 100% Design show by the Principal of SBID, Vanessa Brady OBE.

Entrants were asked to design three areas of a large scale building, including a cocktail bar, a retail unit and an information point.  His design for the cocktail bar had a luxury feel, while the retail unit had two different design styles, separated by the word 'contrast' at the forefront.

When asked what it meant to win the competition, Craig said: "Winning an award from the SBID is a brilliant feeling. It’s great to have my work recognised by industry professionals."

He added, “Solent played an important role in helping me get the award, putting me forward for the competition."

Craig’s winning prize is a year's mentoring with design company MPD London, a consultancy who have created interiors for listed and period properties, new buildings, spacious country mansions and bijou townhouses in the UK and abroad.

It’s been a great year for Craig; as well as the SBID award,  he received an academic excellence award at the University’s built environment end of year show, gained a first class honours degree and started work at Surrey-based engineering firm, E+M Tecnica.

Sarah Bax, Course Leader for interior design said: "We are always proud to see our graduates gaining recognition so early in their careers. This is a great opportunity for Craig.”
