As part of national Universities Week, Southampton Solent invited more than 80 pupils from four local schools from across the city to take part in a range of interactive activities to highlight the research being undertaken at Solent.

Under the theme of ‘Ideas for Life’, pupils from Shirley Warren Junior, Redbridge Secondary, Thornhill Primary and Cantell Secondary schools took part in interactive activities related to how research on  health and wellbeing has a positive impact on our lives.

Exhibits included a healthy eating memory test game; visual illusions to illustrate how the brain works; acoustic testing using ear simulation technology to highlight the dangers of machinery and music amplification and science-based activities including microplastics hidden in sand and a bicycle- powered disco!

Now in its fourth year, Universities Week is about the relevance of university research and its everyday impact on people’s lives.

Professor Anthony Gallagher who heads a research team at Solent will also be taking some of the exhibits he presented along to the Winchester Science Centre on Father’s Day. He said: “It was great to see the children having fun and engaging with the activities.  They asked some really good questions.  Hopefully it has inspired them to develop their own learning and keep asking those questions in future."

A number of members of the public  came along to the  evening session from 5.00-7.00pm
