National award for region's social work support
Southampton Solent University is a key member of a regional education network that recently received a national award for workforce development in social care.
Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth Social Work Education Network (SHIP SWEN) has been awarded the ‘Best employer support for the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment’ (ASYE) Award at Skills for Care’s Accolades.
The award recognises the network’s contribution to maintaining the highest standards of workforce development within social care. Judges praised SHIP SWEN for demonstrating excellent partnership working across a range of sectors to standardise a regional approach to delivering the ASYE.
Marilyn Frost, principal lead for the social work post qualifying provision at Southampton Solent says: “When large organisations are faced with making cuts it is usually training budgets which suffer first. We are pleased that our efforts at Solent to help maintain high standards in employer support for social work have been recognised in this way.”
Network members - including Southampton Solent University, Southampton City Council with Capita, Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth City Council, Isle of Wight Council and Chapter One – were thrilled to win in such a strong category which included entries from Creative Support and Hertfordshire County Council.
Speaking after the award ceremony in London, Colin Bright, Southampton Solent University’s Practice Learning Coordinator, BA (Hons) Social Work said: “For me, a career as a social worker is the most rewarding vocation you can have.
“You need resilience, strength and commitment but the ‘pay back’ in terms of the difference you can make to people’s lives is beyond measure.’
