Industry experts and employers were blown away by the quality of the work on display at Southampton Solent University’s built environment final-year show.

The ‘Celebration of Student Success’ event featured a selection of final-year research projects, dissertations and project work from the BA (Hons) Architectural Technology, BA (Hons) Interior Design and BSc (Hons) Construction Management courses.

The event was organised in association with the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) South East Region, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and CAPITA.

During his keynote speech Solent graduate Alex Naraian, now Associate Director at ADAM Architecture and Chairman of CIAT South East said:

“It has been an absolute privilege to come back and see the students’ work. The standard is phenomenal and it’s great to see so much vision and creativity coming through.”

A student from each course was selected to present their work to the attending guests.

BA (Hons) Interior Design student Yolanda Craig – who has already been snapped up by a London interior design firm- presented her final project-which analysed consumer behaviour with reference to brand imaging and interiors.

Final-year BA (Hons) Architectural Technology student James Benham, from Southampton, presented his research on which profession should champion innovation in traditional-build construction projects.

BSc (Hons) Construction Management student Alex Durden - who was sponsored by his company, Blacknoll Limited, for the duration of his studies - presented his dissertation on 'An investigation into the extent of fire compliance measures within public houses,' focusing on tenanted pub estates.

Also taking part were a group of second year interior design students, who presented a project illustrating building information modelling (BIM) - a process that uses an intelligent 3D model to communicate decisions, design, 3D visualisation and collaboration. Impressed with their work, the Managing Director of Salisbury-based architectural firm HPW has invited the students to undertake work experience there.

John Barfoot, Academic Leader for the Built Environment programme, said: “The students’ work is testament to how they all approach this course - which is with determination, professionalism and real passion.”
