One of the world’s top drummers visited Southampton Solent to share his skills and ground breaking technology as part of a special series of drum clinics being hosted by the university.

Craig Blundell took centre stage in the university’s state-of-the-art television studio, to demonstrate techniques, talk technology and discuss his career, on Thursday 20 February.

During a career spanning more than 30 years, Craig has become an ambassador for British drumming on the international circuit. His services are in high demand and he is regularly recording and performing live for well-known artists, including King Crimson and Deep Purple.

Before turning professional, Craig served with HM Royal Marines Band Service, during which time he composed many original pieces. He is the BBC’s drummer of choice and plays at shows and drum festivals across the globe.

Drummers, session musicians and DJs benefitted from Craig’s knowledge and experience. As well as students from Solent and the university’s partner colleges, members of the public also attended.

Craig said: “I’m really passionate about education and was keen to fit my visit to Solent in my world tour. It was great to meet students in the drumming masterclass and to see familiar faces who I have taught and see how their skills have matured at university.

Craig’s top advice to young drummers is, “Practice what you’re not good at rather than just perfecting your talents. Never give up; you should be constantly challenging yourself.”

Craig joins a growing list of music legends who are taking part in the drum clinics at Solent University. Gerald Heyward, session drummer for legends Michael Jackson, Beyonce, and Jay Z, flew in from the USA, there was a demonstration of advanced drum techniques by one of the UK’s most respected drummers, Neal Wilkinson, plus Carl Palmer from 70s supergroup Emerson Lake and Palmer.

BA Hons Popular Music Production student Dan Mounter said, "The drum clinic by Craig Blundell was incredible. He took time to gather students around the drum kit so that students could observe his unique expertise at close quarters. I really value Craig's knowledge of rhythm and high level drumming skills, the whole thing was amazing and inspirational."
