A Southampton Solent University graduate is going back to his roots with a new exhibition of paintings.

‘Narrative and Symbol’ by the Illustrator Josef Hill, based on the fantasies and imaginings of childhood, will run for several weeks at the Michael Andrews Concourse Gallery within the university.

The paintings, which are executed with eloquent draughtsmanship and rich colours, draw on Josef’s personal memories as a child and on the illustrated storybooks he read as a young boy.

He uses a wide range of visual and cultural references from Paganism to the pre-Columbian Central American cultures to create a range of striking images.

Before he joined Solent as a mature student on the BA (Hons) Illustration degree in 2009, Josef had already been widely published in international magazines and received a number of ‘Best of Category’ nominations for miniature painting and sculpting awards across the UK and France.

Since graduating he has worked to commission as a freelance illustrator, supplementing his income as a part- time technical assistant installing exhibitions for Southampton City Art Gallery, Sea City Museum and Solent University Showcase Gallery. He also undertakes occasional workshops in schools for Southampton City Arts and Heritage and the John Hansard Gallery.

Ron McCormick, Southampton Solent University Art Collection, said:  "Josef Hill is a talented and imaginative young artist striving to make a living in a very challenging field while still managing to retain the integrity of his art. He does this by combining his graphic interests with exhibition display work for the City Art Gallery and Sea City and education workshops in schools and galleries across the region."
