Solent IT students impress industry with their work
Final-year students from the Business Computing Programme at Southampton Solent University are a step closer to securing lucrative jobs for the future after presenting their project work to industry.
More than 50 students showcased a range of designs to prospective employers looking to recruit into technical and business roles, but it was applications for both a smart phone and You Tube that really impressed the judging panel.
Chris Smith, Development Manager from Transactor London Market, said: “Students displayed a very high standard of work in a variety of disciplines, completing an impressive set of projects. Southampton Solent has a great array of staff providing an excellent coverage of business applicable and modern subject matter, with students learning about complicated programming principles.”
First prize for the best and most appealing project was awarded to Phil Harper for an android application designed to improve the security of smart phones.
The runner up was Ethan Watson for his YouTube Data API which allows the user to manage their YouTube subscriptions in more organised categories as well as manage their playlists and searches.
The prizes were donated by Ian Anthony, Technology and Automation Director from CleverTouch Marketing, who currently employs a number of graduates from Solent University’s Computing courses.
Jennifer Muskett, Senior Lecturer in Computing said: “The standard was extremely high and the technical expertise and innovation demonstrated by the students was impressive. These projects are the culmination of three years of hard work and the impact they had on the industry representatives demonstrates our commitment to real-world learning.”
Computer courses at Southampton Solent University were recently given the seal of approval by the British Computer Society (BCS), Chartered Institute for IT.
This accreditation means the University’s computing and networking courses have met the strict requirements set out by the BCS in relation to: course structure, industry relevance, resources and facilities, academic support and student experience.
