A Southampton Solent University student has beaten off stiff competition after winning the coveted ‘Best in Show’ award at this year’s annual D&AD New Blood exhibition attended by the very best in creative talent from across the UK.

The winning entry was created by BA (Hons) Graphic Design student Ida Bergersen for her Harry Potter inspired info-graphic poster design based on facts and figures from the world famous novels.

She said: “To win the award is a great honour; I am really happy and excited! It’s truly amazing to get this award from D&AD New Blood and it will look great on my CV.”

The design was taken from a collection she created for her final major project which included nine three quarter length posters all with information about certain aspects of the book series and the universe J.K. Rowling created.

Inspired to try something new Ida said: “Visually presenting a lot of information without using what are perceived as ‘standard’ and ‘boring’ graphs is certainly a challenge, but I think I pulled it off!”

Ida, who is originally from Norway, chose to complete her final year at Solent after completing two years at the Norwegian School of Creative Studies in Trondheim which has developed a strong association with the University over the last 15 years.

Since her win, Ida has caught the attention of a couple of agencies in London and she is focussing on finding a place to live and work over the summer.

“I definitely want to continue with graphic design and I feel really excited about the future,” she added.

Final-year graphic design, illustration and advertising students are given the opportunity to attend the D&AD New Blood exhibition, which celebrates the finest in design and advertising - each year. A D&AD award is recognised globally as the ultimate creative accolade.

Peter Lloyd, Head of School of Art & Design said: “This exhibition and the awards are the Oscar’s of the creative industry. The Solent stand and our students’ work made a great impression on attending industry. It showcased the dynamic, creative and innovative talent that Solent and produced a lot of work placement and other career opportunities for those exhibiting.”

Notes for Editors:

Other students exhibiting at the D&AD show gained placements from exhibition visitors.
