Southampton Solent Students’ Union is proud to be the first union in the UK to hold a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award licence, making the University the first in the South East of England to be able to offer this award to students.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award was set up in 1956 by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh to inspire, guide and support young people in their self-development and recognise their achievements.

The Students’ Union currently has five students participating in the award, including Aaysha Samrin, first-year student in BA (Hons) Illustration and ‘bronze’ category participant, has just written a children’s book to be distributed and sold in local play centres.

Hannah Mullarky, Vice-President of Student Engagement and ‘gold’ participant of the DofE programme says, “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a great opportunity for our students to get involved with charitable activities and build their confidence. We aim to have 60 students receiving a DofE award by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award’s 60th Anniversary in 2016”.

Solent University Students’ Union officially launched their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme on Thursday 8 May, in the Mayors’ Chambers with The Mayor of Southampton and representation from the Duke Of Edinburgh’s Award and other key stakeholders in attendance.
