Southampton Solent University and Rotary Wessex partnership set in stone
A mutually rewarding relationship between Southampton Solent University and Rotary Wessex was officially acknowledged on Friday 28 November when Mike Wilkinson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, unveiled a plaque in the University’s main reception area.
Speaking to Rotarians and members of the University gathered to watch the unveiling, Mike spoke of the importance to both parties of maintaining this relationship.
“Over the past few years we have seen a number of successful collaborations”, he said, “and the results have been beneficial all round. For example, the students and staff ran a fundraising appeal last spring to support the Rotary Shelterbox Appeal in aid of the Philippines disaster.”
Mike Jackson, District Governor and responsible for 77 clubs and 2,500 members throughout Hampshire, Dorset, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands is delighted to mark the start of a formal corporate partnership.
“We started predominantly as a networking organisation”, he explained, “and as such are keen to get involved in the corporate world. We also need to attract younger members and our work with the students here enables us to demonstrate to them how influential we are. We are great facilitators and fixers and can provide guidance to students that, even if they don’t take it on board immediately, may well prove beneficial to them for the future.”
Bob Bax from Rotary Wessex has been working closely with students for some time and it is primarily through his efforts that the relationship has been so successful.
“I have always been impressed with Southampton Solent University’s commitment towards ensuring its graduates get work at the end of their courses”, he said.
