A photography student’s stunning wall of city images, that will greet arriving passengers at Southampton Airport, was unveiled by The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Mrs Sue Blatchford on Wednesday 11 June.

As part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the city, final-year Southampton Solent University photography student, James Robinson, was commissioned by the airport to take images of people and iconic landmarks of the city. The result is ‘Fifty’ - a stunning wall of fifty photographs for the arrivals area of the airport.

“I am delighted to have been given this fantastic opportunity to capture the diversity, beauty and excitement of the city. Undertaking this commission during the final weeks of my degree has been hard work but tremendous fun,”, says James.

Hopefully it will showcase Southampton to passengers as they arrive at and depart from the airport, increase my exposure with potential clients and help me forge a successful career as professional photographer. continued James, who will also be showcasing his work at the University’s final-year degree show from 13-19 June.

‘Fifty’ features famous locations around Southampton - such as the Mayflower Theatre, St Mary’s Stadium, Tudor House and the port. It’ll be seen by international passengers and local residents alike, providing a warm welcome to the city.

Jan Halliday, Director of Marketing & Communications at Southampton Airport, said: “There are many wonderful places in Southampton and James has managed to capture the character of the city in this photo wall. He has been a pleasure to work with and I hope that this project will provide him with a spring board into the world of work. Indeed, very few photography students can claim to have held a ‘one man installation’ at an airport!”

Professor Mike Wilkinson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent University said: “We were delighted when Southampton Airport invited us to be involved in their 'pledge ' for the 50th anniversary of the city, enabling one of our talented BA Photography students, James Robinson, to demonstrate his skills. We are proud of what James has achieved and the display is a credit to him, our university and the city of Southampton.”
