Final-year Southampton Solent University's BA (Hons) Fashion Management with Marketing students brought high fashion to the city, with Solent Fashion Day '14 at the Grand Café on Thursday 3 April 2014.

Industry experts from Chanel, WGSN Fashion trend forecasters, Global Fashion Management, fashion bloggers, and anthropologist, writer, photographer and Solent Honorary Doctor of Fashion, Ted Polhemus; came to the University to share insights into the industry and give advice on how to succeed within the fashion retail business.

Topics discussed included brand awareness, successful retail management, e-commerce innovations, consumer trends, and the importance of visual merchandising. Students also had an opportunity to network with representatives from top fashion brands.

Southampton Fashion Conference was organised by BA (Hons) Fashion Management with Marketing students Daniella Cheval (20) from Maidstone and Alice Springthorpe (22) from Leicester.

“By using social media at industry events in London we managed to get some fantastic speakers for the conference. It was great to hear what they had to say and the event was really well received.” Said Daniella.

Alice Springthorpe, who has also designed and produced her own clothing range which was sold in the university’s retail enterprise shop Re:So, added, “I’ve really enjoyed studying fashion at Solent. Having the opportunity to work on live projects like the conference looks good on the CV and boosts our employability.”

Israr Jan-Parker, Course Leader of the BA (Hons) Fashion Management with Marketing degree course said, “Daniella and Alice put together an amazing event with speakers flying in from as far away as Glasgow. Solent’s students got to hear inspiring talks from industry experts on visual merchandising, fashion business start-ups, social media, trend forecasting and global brand building.”

Later in the day, students celebrated the best of the city’s couture with ‘The Structured Runway’ fashion show. The fashion collections on the catwalk showcased designs from Southampton's very own independent labels, up and coming designers and the high street.
