BA (Hons) Illustration students at Southampton Solent University introduced a magical theme to this year’s final degree show with puppetry, folktales, Greek mythology and childhood classics featured in their designs.

This week the colourful displays of over 54 final projects have been enjoyed by visitors to the city-centre venue which is home to the Southampton Solent School of Art & Design.

Senior Lecturer, Jonny Hannah said: “This year’s final show kick-started the summer with yet another impressive display of student creativity, with an entrepreneurial and professional approach to their work. Our first and second year students would certainly have been inspired by what they saw this year and it has been great to get such positive feedback from the public.”

Five students separate awards were also given out for: the professional development award, the Unsinkable Press prize for best publication award, The Cakes & Ale Press prize for Text as Image, The Paul Osborne Drawing prize &Outstanding Achievement Award.

Emily Wilkes based her final piece on recreating childhood classics such as Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle was a particular inspiration. Emily who hopes to pursue a career in children’s illustration as her work is colourful and appeals to a younger audience said: “The tutors were both helpful and inspirational; the facilities were really good and always accessible. There’s plenty of support and Southampton is a great place to live and study in.”

Punch and Judy inspired Neo Phoenix to focus on the tall tales and false facts that accompany the puppet shows long history. He’s already doing some freelance work and would like to move to London to do an internship in illustration. He said: “The tutors are really approachable; they were there to listen and always willing to help. Southampton has some really good free parks and there are plenty of green spaces to make it feel like you are in the country.

The students will also have the chance to showcase their work at The Coningsby Gallery in London from 28 July – 2 August.

The exhibition, which previewed on Friday 13 June, is open to the public until Thursday 19 June, from 10.00am - 5.00pm at Southampton Solent School of Art & Design, Level 2, Below Bar, 9 Castle Way S014 2BX.
